California Psychological Inventory

—A self report inventory

—Harrison Gough in 1956,

— 3rd third edition  1987.

— It was created in a similar manner to the MMPI

—by the criterion-group strategy.

—But unlike the MMPI,(maladjustment or clinical diagnosis)

—CPI attempts to evaluate personality in normally adjusted individuals and thus finds more use in counseling settings.

—to assess the everyday “folk-concepts” that ordinary people use to describe the behavior of the people .

— criterion groups (Ex. men Vs women; homosexual men Vs heterosexual men) were contrasted to produce measures of personality categorized as (1) introversion–extroversion, (2) conventional versus unconventional in following norms, and (3) self-realization and sense of integration.

—13 years and older.

—45–60 minutes

—434 true-false questions, of which 194 were taken from the original version of the MMPI

—The advantage of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI)

  • The CPI is commonly used in research settings to examine everything from typologies of sexual offenders (Worling, 2001) to career choices (Gough, 1995, 1996).
  • used with normal subjects.
  • Not like The MMPI and MMPI-2
  • to assess normal individuals for interpersonal effectiveness and internal controls.
