12) Jean Piaget: Theory of Stages of Cognitive Development

  • While the behaviourist school of psychologists was busy in the US with Conditioning and examining the different types and processes of learning by testing animals in the 1930s, Jean Piaget was busy in Switzerland studying numerous newborns, infants, children and adolescents.

Piaget had been trying to understand how change and growth occurs in these different stages of human childhood, refuting the previously held view that children were just smaller adults, who thought like adults. Piaget went on to show the radical differences between the thinking of adults and children at different stages.



He put forth his theory of Development, suggesting 4 stages, as shown in the following reenactment:
